My Pathfinder Society Character: Let Me Show You Her!

Ahh yes, Pathfinder.  3.75 Dungeons & Dragons for people who like the 3.x D&D system but were enraged by Fourth Edition.

(I find both games to be good in some ways, and utterly dreadful in others.  Castles & Crusades is closer to what I actually want out of my D&D gameplay.  D&D Next might fit this bill too.)

By now WOTC is basically using the D&D Encounters program as an extended preview of 5th edition D&D, making it very difficult for 4th edition fans to actually USE the current modules for play.

So instead of going to Next, the local venue runners have decided to go to Pathfinder!

(I would lie if I haven't at least been a little instrumental in pushing them over to it.  Not a large degree, but some cheerleading and mention of the game repeatedly has helped a bit.  Just a BIT though!)

So instead of D&D Encounters we are moving to Pathfinder Society which is Paizo's organized weekly short game session deal.

It has a TON of PDF pages to read to see what and what not is legal for play, and in many cases you have to "earn" the right to use certain classes, races, and the like.  To me this is kind of assy as PF Society does allow you to use whatever you have books you purchased, but some things you need to do stupid things to play them in game.

Even moreso as a LOT of Pathfinder is available as free website pages to read or print out.  Which is good given how ridiculously large just the Core Rulebook is.

(And I vastly prefer the Beginner Box set they did.  Sadly they never made an Expert Box with additional races, classes, and levels for people such as myself who don't like how ridiculously large and unwieldy the full game is.)

While I have a concept for a character, a Dwarf Gunslinger is a bit too complicated for a newbie game so I have decided to play my second choice, which will give me more impetus to paint up my Warmachine Khador Widowmaker variant model and the Guard Dog miniature who I use in said miniatures game already.  (And normally pet it and call it a GOOD BOY.  Because I love doggies.  Especially armored ones that eat off faces to protect my Warcaster.)

So I present to you, printed fresh from the Freeware PCGEN character generator,

Natalya Welyenko:

The miniature is a leather and furs clad NOT FANTASY RUSSIAN woodslady (with silly midriff showing outfit) wielding two axes.  So I thought about either making her as a Barbarian, Ranger, or Fighter with dual weapons wielding.

Given her outfit and my thoughts of a nimble woodswoman hunting enemies of the Motherland in snow covered forests Ranger ended up being a superior choice over the Barbarian.  With her Dexterity based combat style the Barbarian Rage ability isn't as useful and a Fighter loses out on skills.

So Rangers get some handy woodsy skills, the good old Preferred Enemy power, and later on a pet and some Druidic magic!

(If you wish to know a bit more about how the Pathfinder Ranger rolls, here you go:  http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/classes/ranger.html#_ranger )

So she is pretty damned evasive, has a fair damage accuracy and output, and will get better as she goes.  (Weapon Focus and Specialization are normal feats I plan on grabbing.  My 2nd level Ranger feat will be Quick Draw which will allow her to more accurately charge into combat with one handaxe for 2 handed bonuses and damage, then grab her second axe next round for lots of dual wielding murderfun.)

If I was willing to sacrifice Two Weapon Fighting as a feat I picked up at first it would replace her Quick Draw at second.  But for first level having double swing actions is gonna be HUGE.  Also having 12 Hit Points and 17 Armor Class is pretty solid.  A pure Strength Fighter probably won't have as high of AC or will have its equal yet with severe penalties to his or her already poor skill ratings.

This is also why I went with the lighter Studded Leather Armor over a Chain Shirt.

Anyhow, let us see her basic story:

Natalya's young life was simple.  She grew up in the cold northlands with her mother, father, and numerous pets.  Living miles away from the nearest village her father Sergei was a woodsman and tracker, hunting dangerous animals and keeping trade routes safe.  Her mother Anya was a druid's assistant and healer who helped keep the local Druid's Grove safe and who tended to the locals which normally lead her to be away for weeks at a time.

Natalya then mostly became her father's daughter, being taught the ways of a Ranger when she wasn't busy playing with woodland animals.  The times she went along with her mother to deal with medical needs and the like of nearby villages she found people in general and the children her own age odd and distant.

People were mostly evasive.  Dishonest.  Clannish and self serving.  More concerned with money and collecting useless material goods.  Animals were better in her mind.  She tended to be shy around these awful people and their ways.  (Not to mention she never understood most people spending money on fancy clothing and spending the long and cold winter months hiding indoors with hearths spouting smoke into the air.  This particularly bothered her during the summer months where she rarely wore much at all and even then mostly because of her parent's urging.  The amount of scars all over her from crashing through wild brushes and landing on sharp rocks did more to make her realize clothing had at least some benefits.)

As she came of age her parents tried to introduce her to potential suitors and get her to do more with people besides just swinging axes at the odd bandits that would make the mistake of moving through this well protected region.

But this protection is what caused her to eventually leave.

A group of bandits were soundly defeated by Natalya, Sergei, Anya, and Anya's Druid Superior.  The Druid decided to let a few of the younger ones escape, feeling that they were more or less bored young nobles who clearly would learn from their misadventures with the dregs of society, go home, and grow up.

Instead one of them, Windsor Hawson decided to funnel his family fortune into getting revenge.  He found a group of young Necromancers and Vampire groupies who were much like him except dabbling with the forces of the Undead instead of just doing a bit of banditry.  Over the course of a year his parents had untimely and unfortunate deaths, and his elder brother never returned from a business trip.  Now with a fairly large estate and more money than he really had any need for, he was able to fund and patronize these Necromancers and even get in contact with a recently turned Vampiress he would free from her mistress, and get her to fall in love with him.

He was only using them all.

He then brought his group to get revenge on the region, burning trees, slaughtering animals, raising the dead, and finally attacking both the Grove and Natalya's house simultaneously.  While nobody was at the house it was razed, with many of her beloved animal friends' corpses defiled and left for the family to discover.

The attack on the Grove was less successful, as more Druid initiates were present at the time, but the battle was costly for both sides leading to the Druid Superior's demise along with at least 28 Necromancers and their flunkies.

Windsor and the Vampiress chose to hunt down Sergei and Natalya who were out on a camping trip, investigating reports of a rampaging Dire Bear who was reported to be attacking travelers in the region.

When they attacked, Windsor was merciless.  He used what little magic he had learned from his dupes to attack with summoned skeletons and all but forced the Vampiress to attack suicidally.  Natalya and Sergei fought a defensive running battle, taking advantage of running streams and the terrain to confound and evade the superior enemy and her enraged "lover".

As the fight continued for hours and Windsor's resources ran out he became more and more unhinged, becoming more abusive to the Vampiress, and taking further risks.

Using stealth Sergei and Natalya were able to figure out what was going on and what Windsor was up to, eventually getting the Vampiress to turn on him, causing him to flee.

Heartbroken, she let the two in on everything that had happened and helped them come to a last minute rescue of the Druids.

As the sun rose, the Vampiress wept tears of blood and let the Dawn Star claim her.

The Grove and the Forest were gutted.  They survived but much was lost.

Natalya begged permission to go bring Windsor to justice no matter how long it took and no matter where he would go.  She told her parents that they had wanted her to interact more with people and this would be the perfect way for her to do so.

With worried looks they knew there was no way they could stop her, fearing as she left (with a surviving puppy who had managed to not be noticed when their home was destroyed sneaking behind) they would never see their daughter again....

Personality: Natalya does not entirely understand people and civilization.  To her simple hard work, direct discussion, and being true to oneself and to others is the way things should be.  Laugh when a thing is funny.  Cry when sad.  She doesn't get the masks people wear in plain sight to hide their true selves.  She finds collecting finery and wasting resources to be foolish.  She finds caging animals repulsive.   One should earn the flesh of the Deer, the flesh of the free and the wild.

She WANTS to understand society.  But she fears it might always be beyond her.  No matter once she takes out Windsor she plans on going back home anyhow.  If she can earn some money to repair what time and hard work alone cannot so the better.  And magical axes to deal with the vile Undead wouldn't hurt much either.

Plus bears and wolves don't care if she wants to climb a tall tree naked and just listen to the songs of the birds and enjoy a good nap in the sun.  Or a brisk winter swim.

People are strange.

Quotes:  Deez eeez not how vee duu eet in zee wilds.  Wilds are good.  Citeez are pointless.
Vhen can vee go back outside?
You vear those clothes to hide your fatness.  Your clothes would make good tent.  Two tents even!  Should buy good axe and go make bridge to fish off of.  You not be so fat then.

Combat Style:  Natalya's style is simple.  Attack from the woods, strike hard, strike fast, get back into the woods.  If woods aren't available she will make use of any and all terrain she can find.

There we go!  A brand new character ready to go on adventures and hopefully not die horribly.

My D&D 4th Edition Campaign Character: Let Me Show You Her!

Me?  Playing in an actual 4th edition D&D campaign?  Not D&D Encounters but full bore, proper campaign D&D 4th?

Yes.  Yes I am.

And when I am playing actually is taking me out of D&D Encounters.  Go figure.

But as always I come prepared.

What kind of prepared?  ALL THE PREPARED:
I have everything a player needs to rock out the D&D 4th.  A compartment box full of dice, minis, and counters!  My D&D Encounters Delver Reward Card!  A counter tray full of Dapper Devil counters plus a pencil sharpener, and some beads for "Bloodied" effects.  My deck of Fortune Cards I mostly got for free.  A quick reference card to various status ailments.  My character sheet from my short term D&D Insider subscription because I am cheap.  A brand spanking new notebook with Twilight Sparkle the magical unicorn on the cover because I am playing one of the Stewart children and as she is a 17 year old girl it seems something she would have.  Also My Little Pony annoys people and I find this completely hilarious.  And a miniature of course.

(Not shown is my box of Reaper Bones, my magnetic initiative tracker, more pencils, rulebook, dry erase and wet erase pens, and Dungeon Tiles.  You would think just being a player I wouldn't need to bring a pile of stuff.  But I am the most helpful player.  With a lot of toys I need to rationalize spending money one.  So there.)

We didn't really get anything done at the first game (ok only two of us showed up and I was horribly late and we had a turn 3 TPK in the first fight in the first dungeon.  Modules made for five PCs don't work well with two.) but it was a fair warmup.  Next session I will have a nice and organized plastic tub full of my prepainted minis which are organized (human sized obviously) to go with my Bones.

Yet I do like to do PC writeups and Aaron Stewart's cheerfully outgoing daughter Alexis has always needed one.  If you want to see him in his 3.0 version from back in the day go here:  http://wargamedork.blogspot.com/2008/01/blast-from-past.html .

But now let's take a look at Alexis in her D&D 4th edition (Essentials) incarnation:

Alexis Stewart with her father's old longsword.  (Miniature is a Reaper Bones figure painted poorly by me.  But I spent a good 3 hours on her so bugger off if you don't like it.  Still looks better than most prepaints.  Most.)

Alexis Stewart
Age:  17
Height:  5' 6"
Weight:  135 lbs.
Size:  Medium
Alignment:  Good
Race/Gender:  Human Female
Class:  Ranger (Essentials Hunter)

Level: 1

Str:  10
Con:  11
Dex:  20
Int:  10
Wis:  14
Cha:  8

Skills Trained:  Acrobatics, Athletics, Dungeoneering, Heal, Nature, Stealth

Defenses:  17 AC, 12 FORT, 17 REF, 13 WILL

HP:  23 (Bloodied 11, Surge Value 5, 6 Surges/Day)

Initiative:  5
Speed:  6
Passive Insight/Perception:  12/12

Basic Attacks:
Longsword, 5 to hit, 1d8 damage
Longbow, 9 to hit, 1d10+5 damage

Feats:  Bow Expertise, Distant Advantage, Master at Arms.

At Will Powers:  Aimed Shot, Clever Shot, Rapid Shot, Aspect of the Pack Wolf, Aspect of the Regal Lion.

Encounter Powers:  Disruptive Shot, Heroic Action.

Starting Equipment:  Adventurer's Kit, 90 Arrows, Longsword, Longbow, Leather Armor, Climber's Kit, Grappling Hook, Two extra Sunrods, 7 GP.  (70 lbs carried)

Character Background:  Alexis Stewart is the oldest of the two children of adventurers Aaron Stewart (Bard/Psionic Warrior), and Mindaria Stephens (Druid).  Born when her father was 19 and her mother 24, her birth largely ended her parents' active adventuring careers.   At least for a few years.

Her brother Eric (Druid) was born two years after her.  Until her brother was 10, they were mostly a relatively happy family unit.  Her mother tended to the Druidic needs of their hometown while their father continued to ply his trade as a Bard while sometimes using his psionic powers to assist in other ways.  \

From time to time the children were left in the care of the Stewarts' other former adventuring friends while they took care of various things.  Otherwise their folks were mostly at home with their aunts and uncles being the rest of the Armageddon Hunters adventuring company.  They grew up with stories and tales of adventures and were themselves trained to follow in their footsteps, though hopefully just to defend themselves from former enemies of the family.

Yet when Eric was 10 everything changed.  One morning Alexis woke up to discover their mother had left, leaving a letter to explain what injuries Aaron had suffered in their course of their final adventure could and should not happen again, but their old enemies needed to be fought and investigated.

This seriously hurt Aaron though he tried his best not to show it, continuing to raise his children, sometimes even taking them on missions and travels that were thought to be safe.

One day Mindaria returned, injured seriously, being followed by minions of their old foes as she had discovered their plots and disrupted them.  Giving his children a gem of teleportation, it threw both of them across the Multiverse.  They arrived on this campaign world together, but agreed to separate and explore any and all possible routes back to their homeworld.

And thus Alexis Stewart begins her adventure!

Personality:  Alexis is an.. odd duck.  A mixture of tomboy with some girlishness around boys she fancies, she has a tendency to open her mouth first, then start throwing punches as she inevitably causes some sort of fight to break out.  While she is a complete "Daddy's Girl" practically worshipping the ground her dad walks on, her thoughts about her mother are.. not very kind.  As far as Alexis is concerned her mother left her father and little brother and breaking their hearts was unforgivable.

As to her brother?  While completely devoted to him she has also made it her life's mission to make him utterly miserable and outdo him in every way.  Though while she is loud and bombastic he is quiet, sullen, and sarcastic.  She fights from a distance as a supremely skilled archer while he gets stuck in close, spinning his quarterstaff like it is an extension of his being.  In her mind he is her personal punching bag except when other people try to mess with him.  Then she jumps into the fray and wreaks havoc.

Causing destruction and fights is FUN.

Basically Alexis (or Alex as her friends call her, sometimes to her dismay when she wants to feel like a girl) is well meaning but she is loud, obnoxious, and tends to start fights when she thinks there needs to be one. She wears her heart on her sleeve.

And now she has joined up with a small adventuring team to deal with stolen items and missing persons, which may have escalated to murder.

Time to take out her 17th birthday gift.  Her bow the "Skullf*&ker 500" and do some good.

And hopefully find a way home AND make her brother look bad in the process by doing it first!

Quotes:
"Yeah?  Well?  YOUR THE JERKFACE!!"
"GET EM!"
"ITS NOT MY FAULT YOU SUCK!"
"This is the part where if I had boy parts I would tell you to suck them!"
"Follow me and shut up.  My dad taught me how to look out for Orkie up in the trees."

Roleplaying Notes:   Have you ever seen that new cartoon show Gravity Falls?  Well Mabel Dipper is seriously a friendlier kid version of Alexis.  Its SCARY.  Add in a little love for action and adventure plus a glee at making her brother miserable and Mabel could practically be her mental twin!

(If you haven't go watch the show.  Its amazing.)

My AD&D 2nd Edition Character, Let Me Show You Her

Thanks to Meetup.com I happened to stumble upon a 2nd edition AD&D group being formed.  We had a nice meet and greet today and it seems as if we and our schedules should mesh rather well.

(I would link the group but I doubt most of my readers are even in the same state.  Hell, many of you aren't even in the same COUNTRY.)

While I tend to prefer GMing, I am certainly not unwilling to play.  Sometimes its fun just to be a player.  No fuss, no muss, no real prep work, just make a PC, pay attention, don't be a dunderhead.

We did some character generation and my rolls were pretty dire, and even 2 rerolls just made for a meh Bard, which was going to be my first choice.  (A Male Human)

But.. we were allowed access to the Complete Book series, and the reduce an attribute by 2 to raise another by 1 deal.  So why not bring my 4th ed Essentials character back in a 2nd edition form?  A Deep Gnome Thief?

This can be workable.

So here is my newest PC, hopefully who will go on to have lots of fun in a good RPG campaign full of adventure, cool loot, and tons of exp as she shoots sharp pointy things through soft evil squishy things that scream and bleed.

Feel free to use her as an NPC for your own games, or as inspiration for a character.

And here she is, Sneakycheeks!  (Big pictures so the text is totally legible. I can read it in smaller sizes but I apparently have good close in eyesight or something.  Character picture taken in Neverwinter Nights 2 thanks to Windows Snipping Tool.)

(Character Sheet thanks to AD&D Core Rules CDROM 2.0.  May it never be scuffed.)

Background:  Sneakycheeks (real name unknown) is mostly in it for the fun.  Of course having grown up in the Underdark her idea of fun is killing monsters, and putting a kibosh on any evil plans any sapient race may have, especially the Drow.  At an early age she took to sneaking out of town, finding things to hide behind, and putting arrows through things that couldn't see her, then enjoying the chaos it caused.  This did put her in hot water with her family and the settlement she lived in as Deep Gnome females are rarely encouraged to leave the safety of a town, much less engage Drow and the various other nefarious denizens of the Underdark alone.

(Not that this ever stopped her any of course.  To her it was even more amusing to see the disruption her actions caused at home too, especially when she probably saved the settlement a quarter dozen times or more.)

One day her uncle Jhasti Dhaggerdhiggin (Deep Gnome L 9 Illusionist) was visiting the town with a band of adventurers looking for parts for his Spelljammer, a small Drow craft with the shape of a Spider.  When the group had collected what they came to the Underdark for they headed back upworld, not knowing Sneekycheeks (who obviously had earned her nickname by this point) was following close behind.

Upon reaching the surface, a days long trek, the group had no choice but to let her tag along on their planetary and dimension hopping adventures to stop the actions of Galthik the Aurak.  Being the flighty, easily distracted type she is, on whichever world the Nentir Vale resides on, she hopped off when the ship had landed for supplies and got involved in that world's Keep on the Borderlands Incident where her mostly self taught skills of archery and thievery helped save the Keep.

(Some would say she got involved as much to help people as she did to embarrass and harass the Knight Rufus Landale.  According to her, their differences aren't anything some Oil of Slipperiness can't solve.  Unsurprisingly Rufus got himself overly injured in the Borderlands Incident and wasn't around most of the time.   He is currently travelling with Axecrash the Dwarf Machinist, and the Hasegawa Sisters Ryoko (Samurai), and Haruhi (Shugenja), much glad Sneakycheeks has gone elsewhere.)

In the final battle of the Borderlands Incident a powerful otherplanar machine attempted to finish off Sneakycheeks and her friends (Elven Cleric, Human Cleric, Half Orc Barbarian, Human Wizard) but was destroyed.  Being the stuff of another reality, infused with the powers of the Outer Planes it exploded, sending Sneakycheeks into another planet at a different time.  She found her abilities and equipment had been altered by this flux in reality.

Now its a new world with new people to meet, new bad guys to irritate, and more trouble to cause.

And causing trouble is what Sneakycheeks likes best!

Roleplaying Notes:  Sneakycheeks is a troublemaker, albeit a well intentioned one.  Her jokes on fellow adventurers are mostly harmless, though usually with some intelligent intent behind them.  ("Uhh barbarian?  Could you take a bath sometimes?  I think the Owlbears on the next continent can smell you.")  Against evil and selfish foes she takes no prisoners and shows no concept of honorable combat, choosing to hide and shoot from out of sight.  She has no problem running from a losing fight, or leaving behind anyone too stupid to know when to fall back.  To save a burning orphanage full of small children?  Fight till you can't.  When outnumbered 2 to 1 and there is a nice line of retreat?  MARINES WE ARE LEAVING.

To her, its better to run away and fight again some other time, hopefully with a large army and having set up a massive ambush.

She is fair minded when it comes to things like treasure, magic items, and returning things to their rightful owners, provided the owners earned it through honest work and not murder, slavery, or corruption/greed.

To her its more fun causing irritation and discord in intelligent evil as opposed to outright destruction.  Having lived in the Underdark for much of her life, she knows full well most evil will destroy itself.

Sometimes it just needs a shot in the ass to get things started.

Quotes:  "If they catch you they will kill you, but first, they gotta catch you.  So let's not get caught.  That would suck."
"Fair fights are for suckers."
"The only good Drow are the ones killing each other.  Which is every Drow.  Waitaminute.. I need to rethink this one.."
"But I don't WANT to form a battle line.  They can see me.  And that means they can hit me.  I'm allergic to death.  And too cute for it!"
"These monsters?  Oh my Uncle Jhasti has fought em.  He calls them Godscursed mother$*&*ing oozing sores on an Owlbear's (*& after its just been *(&^$ed in the *(&$&# by a Terrasque with Herpes.  Its funny shooting them in the head.  They get so bent out of shape!"

Gamma World. This game amuses me already.

I will do a better review and overview when I get around to it, but using an online character generator, it made me THIS:

Introducing: Doctor Blobby, the Blob of SCIENCE!

Blobby was a friendly Slime who liked to engage in Slime races and other bouncy related Slime activities.  His day job involved working with a Doctor West on experiments as an assistant.  You see Blobby had graduated from Slime College and was thus smarter than your average Slime and his toughness made him quite resistant to the random explosions and tentacle zombie outbreaks that were the result of most of Doctor West's experiments.

But one day Blobby when fighting back yet another angry tentacle zombie intent on doing tentacle-y things to Doctor West's rather attractive girlfriend he accidentally got stabbed with a syringe full of the strange green glowy goop that makes said zombies.

He grew from a small Slime into a large one.  (He is now about 1 meter tall in normal form, though he expands to twice that if he needs to block laser beams and such from hitting friends.) A radioactive one.  But he still does his science bits on his own now as an explorer.  You see now whenever he takes damage, parts of him fall off (don't worry he grows his slimeness back!) as delicious Slushie bits.

Doctor West was getting a little ticked that his girlfriend was playfully slapping Blobby and then licking and or sucking off the tasty frozen beverage residue created.

So Blobby left to explore the world, his mother and father giving him a Clydesdale horse "Cloppy" and a nice Transformers branded play tent he uses as the saddle.

Blobby enjoys researching SCIENCE wherever he goes, bouncing about as Slimes are wont to do, and meeting new friends.  He uses his powers of Gravity Control to do SCIENCE.  He plans on eventually turning Cloppy into a hybrid of Clydesdale and Pterosaur.

I am not sure what kind of paint WOTC staffers were huffing when they came up with the dual origin system for this game but I kind of love them for it.  With a little creativity you can make such wonderfully silly characters as the one above.

My AD&D 1st ed Character: LET ME SHOW YOU HER

Over at Alive and Out of Print . org they are doing a Play By Post game of the classic Against the Giants series. I am joining in, taking one of the pregens and making it my own. I chose the first of the 2 Clerics and turned him into the following:

1920104560
(She sort of looks like that. The picture is Rally Vincent from Gunsmith Cats)

Sister Marimae Flanaghan (Aka: Sister Mary Facesmasher)
Human Female Cleric of Sigmar
Lawful Good
Age: 31 Height: 5' 8" Weight 143 lbs.

STR 16, INT 10, WIS 18, DEX 12, CON 16, CHA 17
72 HP
AC -2, 0 Shieldless, 10 Unarmored
THACO 14, 12 with +2 Mace
Damage to S or M is 1d6+3 (2 for +2 Mace, +1 for STR 16)

SPELL SLOTS
1 2 3 4 5 6
7 6 5 4 2 1

EQUIPMENT
Mace +2, Plate Mail +2, Shield +2, 2 Potions of Invisibility, Potion of Diminution, 2 Potions of Extra Healing

Backstory: Mary grew up on a different world than that which contains the lands of Greyhawk. A land with endless wars against the Undead, Orks, and the other dimensional forces of Chaos. It is on this world that she became a priestess of Sigmar, a god of justice and warfare, ascended from humanity. She was mostly tasked with teaching orphans and had little chance to go out in the field. However she became infamous for believing in the old adage of "Spare the rod and spoil the child".

Her students tended to be rather well behaved, even for orphans growing up under religious doctrination. (Many will grow up to be Witch Hunters, Inquisitors, or more fantatical Warpriests because of this...) With her reputation one of the senior priests decided he would prefer her to punish him for his sins. Because he was a VERY naughty boy.

Needless to say, Mary ran the hell out of there, collected her meager belongings, and decided to travel the world, which lead her into a portal bringing her to the Free City of Greyhawk. There she found her calling at putting large blunt objects through the faces of monsters, criminals, and anyone else who was an enemy of justice and peace. She became a freelance cleric connected to the St Cuthbert order which she considers to pretty much be Sigmar by another name anyhow.

After a few years of travelling and adventuring she decided it was time to settle down and start up a church of her own in some out of the way town with funds she had collected while cleansing the land of heretics and monsters. Life was fine except for one thing. One of the workers hired to build her church, a half orc named Geal. (LN Commoner) She was enjoying his hard sweaty work a little too much, and jumping into a nearby lake and small waterfall to pray away her feelings was working less and less each day.

Thus with little more than some money left to have her church finished and a note to the workers to finish and how to get some other priests to take care of it, she left to travel again, working out her (in her mind anyhow!) filthy thoughts by hitting more evil things in the face with blunt objects.

Rufus grew up in the late 70s and early 80s. While his family was pretty poor, he was mostly happy, and his Saturday mornings were spent with a bowl of Corn Pops, a couple toys, and many glorious hours in front of the TV watching cartoons.

Cartoons were his escape from living in a trailer home and his generally off working (when they weren't out drinking) parents rarely being around. Optimus Prime, Duke, and Captain Global were his father figures. The Voltron Force his brothers and sisters. The Thundercats his pets.

In a rare difference one day in 1988 he was taken to an amusement park for his birthday. His mother being too hung over to even get out of bed, it was just Rufus and his dad that day. And it was there in a land of roller coasters and videogames that he was taken. His father was getting them lunch and Rufus was over by the Star Wars machine playing a couple rounds when he heard some splashing at the lake over the park's fence. It sounded like someone was drowning!

Following what he learned from various morals and messages in his cartoons he acted without hesitation, jumping over the fence to try to help whoever was in danger. There was NO TIME to waste! He yelled quickly for anyone to get real help and dove right in to help whoever was in trouble.

When he got to the thrashing person he found it to be a preteen just like him. In fact once he got a good look at him, he saw it WAS HIM. With an evil grin this impostor tried to pull him under only to get a solid punch from Rufus. Those martial arts classes at the Y were paying off! It worked for Snake Eyes after all. Then from below something was pulling him under! He grabbed at his doppleganger and didn't let go. Deeper and deeper till all went black.

When his father heard the commotion and got over there he saw something bob to the surface, lifeless.

His only son. On his 12th birthday. Dead.

Rufus was then indoctrinated into his new world by Stefan. A world of hunts and violence and death. Yet Stefan was stern, not harsh, and took a firm liking to Rufus' spirit and attitude. He had seen so few people who actually were as idealistic as this boy was. Rufus for a time followed his instructions, and let the beast inside come out. Yet it was a noble beast, a white tiger. Yet even the most majestic animal has a side terrible to behold, a side of wrath. Whenever Rufus saw injustice this side came out. The results were usually fatal for someone.

On what would have been his 24th birthday Stefan let Rufus go. The day before Stefan had professed all his feelings towards Rufus. Feelings Rufus did not share or reciprocate. In fact in spite of the power and magic and adventures they had shared Rufus merely wanted to be in the real world with his family.

Hurt, Stefan told him to leave. But now the hunter would be the hunted. Like one of Rufus' favorite movies said "If they catch you, they will kill you".

But first they had to catch him. And Rufus said he would take out anyone who tried, even if he fell in the process. Even if he had to face Stefan himself. Optimus Prime didn't back down when Megatron fought him on Autobot City, and neither would Rufus!

Getting back to the real world Rufus tried to reconnect with his family. His mother blaming his father, had left him via a cheap pistol in her mouth. His father had spent the last decade working and when not working drinking trying to forget it all. Yet this man seemed so much like his boy it brought a little life back to him. He helped his son get back on his feet any way he could, using some of his drinking buddies to get Rufus fake ids and data so he could live like a normal person.

Yet Rufus could not stay. They would hunt him. Saying goodbye to his dad, he joined the Navy for a tour and travelled the world, keeping moving and as sailors so often do, never really staying in one place for too long. He took this time to learn as much as he could, and sent most of his pay home to his father, outside of what he needed for martial arts classes and basic necessities like clothes and Corn Pops.

Upon completing his tour in the Navy he started competing in various martial arts competitions both legal and illegal, winning enough to live out of a suitcase and help people in the towns he visited, like Bill Bixby did in the Hulk.

Then one day a friend of his, Eric Stewart (possibly my secondary character) introduced him to other runaways. He found notice of a meeting one summer night in Willimantic Connecticut.

And yet again, everything changed.

(Actual play begins here.)

The Summer King Sid was murdered! The Spring Queen turned up missing! People were thrown into the Hedge without their consent! Thrust into this sort of situation Rufus helped to take charge, worked with his fellow runaways and brought Sid's killer to justice, and revealed the reason the area was so safe in the past. People were being taken as sacrifices and taken back to those nightmarish lands.

Rufus was elected Summer King and is currently trying to come to grips to his new role as a commander of disparate people who are full of mistrust and doubt. Rufus will bring them together as brothers and sisters in arms, even if he has to die to do it.

His childhood heroes would do no less, and neither will he.

My D6 Character. LET ME SHOW YOU HIM.

Note if you are not the GM of this game you do not know all of these things below.

Name: Davis Wilson
Occupation: Medical Researcher/Grad Student
Human Male, age 26
Height: 5' 8"
Weight: 142
Brown Hair, Grey Eyes, Glasses

Reflexes: 2D
Coordination: 3D
Physique: 2D
Presence: 3D
Command: 4D
Persuasion: 4D
Knowledge: 5D
Business: 6D
Medicine: 6D
Scholar: 6D
Tech: 6D
Perception: 3D
Repair: 4D

Advantages: Wealth (R1), Equipment (R3) (A secret zombie research lab in Northern New Jersey)

Disadvantages: Quirk (R1) "Loves" The dead. (His zombie girlfriend in the basement in THAT sort of way. He is merely fond of dead people in general.) Devotion (R2) To turn the world into a happy smiling land of the dead. Devotion (R1) Penguins.

Body Points: 30

Background, Davis is a brilliant graduate student researcher at NYU focusing on medical science and medical technology. While there he met a brilliant but quirky Chemistry student, Sally Graham. She was a bit gothy and a bit into using her chemistry knowledge to get herself high. He liked Penguins and Disney cartoons. The two became romantically involved, both being on the wierd side of things. One day Sally came up with a new gas. Davis being busy that day, she huffed and she puffed. And eventually fell down and died. Davis arrived at their Jersey home to find her comatose. Not knowing what she had inhaled, he quickly grabbed any restorative chemicals in the house and attempted to revive her. Between what she had taken and what he gave her, she came back to life.

Sort of. While perfectly sapient, she had.. hungers. Hungers for living flesh. Insatiable hungers. Davis has a few missing chunks of flesh to prove it. However with this new unlife she also felt sensations deeper than anything she had ever had before, and an almost continuous high. Together they made up a room for her to keep her from losing control and going out on a murderous hungry rampage. Davis, now a little unhinged, feels that everyone can eventually be as happy as Sally seems to be. Together they are researching and trying to figure out exactly which chemicals made Sally the way she was. Sometimes he brings her home dinners in her room, sometimes he brings home subjects to try replicating Sally's situation.

Currently the unliving he can make are unlike Sally. Generally either biological or with technical bits the zombies are far less human in appearance, and generally far more stupid, only being under Davis' control with technical implants in place. So far none of them including Sally are infectious, but Davis is quickly closing in on the missing pieces to the zombie apocalypse puzzle.

With his known biomedical and biotechnical skills he has been recruited to look into supernatural matters. He does his university work during the day, while working on his darker efforts at night.

Personality: Generally cheerful with a dark sense of humor. Davis has a tendency to break into cartoon music songs while working on things. He keeps his zombie work generaly quiet, and won't even tell Sally what his eventual plans for the world is.

Equipment: Usually Davis carries a field medical kit and a field electronics/hardware repair kit in his van, and a small pocket kit of each on his person alongside a .22 pistol for self defense/emergency zombie termination. He has no problem looting morgues, back alleys, or graveyards for the recently dead or ought to be dead anyhow.

His Home: The top level is a plain small house in a low end area of the Passaic county. The top level seems like a simple college student with a little cash windfall's kind of home, though in Davis' case decorated with a heavy Penguin motif. Downstairs is hidden by a secret trap door and contains his laboratory and Sally's living quarters. The whole of downstairs is generally bathroom tiled, with Sally's section being sectioned off with a clear bulletproof glass wall. Her area has the same sorts of in floor drains and plastic coverings over her property. The ceiling has biohazard and general water sprays in order to clean up after her messier meals. Or failed experiments. Sally quite enjoys her post meal showers. Davis enjoys watching...

Off in another section is another trap door leading to corpse disposal. It is mostly a lye tub, and a small unobtrusive crematory for whatever remains. The smoke merely looks like it is coming out his chimney.

A Blast From the Past and my 3.0 D&D Character: LET ME SHOW YOU HIM

Today I wanted to see if my ancient Athlon 3200 XP machine with a Radeon 4400 would turn back on. (Its got issues with being turned off and on. Its why I gave up on it, went laptop, then went Mac!) To my surprise it did, allowing me to clean up the machine and empty its little 80 gig HD into merely Windows XP, Service Pack 2, and Nero Express.

It had a couple of files I missed having and a few I totally forgot about, like the free release of The Dominion War Sourcebook for the Last Unicorn Games edition of Star Trek Deep Space Nine. (Which is even nicer for Pico, who plans on running a DS 9 game using my copies of Savage Worlds and the DS9 RPG.)

So I am looking through pictures and folders and finding nice things and no porn whatsoever. (I am a goodie goodie after all. Probably too much of a goodie goodie. Sure as hell doesn't get me anywhere!) However in my D&D folder I found a little treasure from way back in the year 2000. The D20 character write up for a PC I played in a 2 years long campaign before I finally realized most modern D&D players are nitwits and most modern editions of D&D suck. (Ok, every edition besides Basic D&D sucks..)

Thus I shall share his writeup here. Not to mention its an archive of it so I can have it handy should he appear in my Basic D&D games in some form. (Its amazingly easy to plug AD&D 1st and 2nd classes into Basic with AD&D Hit Point values given to PCs and NPCs..)

Enjoy!

About Aaron:

Aaron is a young man who is mostly out to do heroic stuff and have a good
time. Both of these things will lead him to cute girls, so he believes. He
was brought up in an orphanage where he tended to read anything he could get
his hands on, while trying to get the less intelligent kids there to do his
bidding. When he was 14 he managed to scrape up enough money to go to a pub
and listen to the musicians there. He had heard the street performers
before, but never could get into a pub to hear the REAL musicians and
storytellers like the ones in books.

It changed his life.

This beautiful, but sad young woman was playing songs of such complexity and
detail Aaron knew what he wanted to do: be a Bard. He was able to talk
this woman for a few minutes that night, and found out who she was. (Alys
Dreamchaser, NG Bard 11/Cleric of Bahamut 3) She took pity on this wide
eyed and charming kid, and gave him a letter and some money to get some
basic training with the local bards in the area who were willing to train
others in their craft. He has not seen her since that night, but hopes to
find her and repay her for her kindness someday.

While it wasn't a large amount of training, it was enough to give him
something to work off of. He took the knowledge he was given and spent alot
of time putting on shows for his fellow orphans, who usually gave him a
spare copper or two, though usually any candies or sweetcakes they might
have had. This is why he has a bit of a tummy to him. He also discovered
that girls really liked music.

To him this was the greatest thing ever.

Sadly, when one of his fellow orphans decided to show him just how moving
his music really was to her, the people running the orphanage chose to send
him out the door. On his ass. Instead of letting himself get down about
it, he chose this time to take what little money he had left and go
exploring, something the heroes and heroines of storybooks did. During this
time he played small pubs and inns, which gave him little money, but the
free room, board, and alcohol more than made up for it. He tended to spend
any money he made on charity and revelry anyways.

He mostly prefers to tell stories over actual singing as of late, and has
spent the last year getting some notoriety for this. Unfortuneately, not
all of it is good. Most of his stories tend to be on the dirty side, and
usually about self reliant women. This tends to get him a number of female
fans. Sadly for him, most of them are middle aged women whose husbands are
not very attentive to their wives, yet jealous and generally of foul
temperament.

Needless to say, young Aaron does not do many repeat engagements.

Currently he is travelling from the last town he was at, where his story
about a Drow Elf Sorceress, an inn, and 20 Paladins upset the local clergy
quite a bit.

(Rufus' Note: I actually made this song/poem back in the day on a chat RP site. It was a soft R in content IIRC. Sadly, its totally lost to the ether. But I do like I took something and used it somewhere else. Never let a good idea go to waste!)

When encountered, Aaron usually seems to be overly cheerful and
enthusiastic, though with a mouth that makes sailors blush at some of the
expletives that come out of it. He tends to try to do the right thing
without thinking of the consequences.

He prefers to talk his way out of trouble wherever he can, but is more than
willing to use tricks, traps, and the occasional shots from his Composite
Longbow when he has to, usually while telling his enemies how their sheep
will be widows when he is through with them.

To him, life is one big adventure from a storybook.

And with a little luck, he won't reach the chapter where thousands of women
grieve over his gravesite for a couple of decades!

He has since been konked on the head, which has awakened his latent psychic
powers he has honed into something useful thanks to a trainer in a town.

He still shoots his bow at things, he has just gotten MUCH better at it.
